History of Qur’an translation

The ranks of Islam followers are being joined all over the world. Thousands of people required competent and reliable translations of meanings of Muslims’ Holy Script into different languages.

The history of the Qur’an translation into Russian goes back to times of Peter the Great, who was initiator of the first translation of the Qur’an into Russian. This translation didn’t do justice to the original for the reason it was translated from not very successful French translation of Due Rieh. The new stage in study of the Qur’an started only in 70s of XIX century, after translations of D.N. Boguslavskiy and G.S. Sablukov from Arab language. Translations of I.Y. Krachkovskiy, T.A. Shumovskiy, V. Porokhova, M.-N. O. Osmanov, B.Y. Shidfar and et all are also widespread today. Each of these works is a great contribution into development of the Qur’an study, differs in style, and has its positive and negative peculiarities. Academician Krachkovskiy tried to provide literal interpretation of ayahs, giving special attention to lexical meaning of words and several Islamic terms. And V. Porokhova considered that it is more important to convey the high message of the Qur’an style, which inspires hearts and exercises minds of people. Translation of T.A. Shumovskiy reveals a peculiar poetical talent of author. But meanings of several ayahs were so inaccurate that it is hard to call the whole work a “translation”. Orientalists M.-N. O. Osmanov and B.Y. Shidfar relied on reach experience of predecessors, but couldn’t escape mistakes, contradicting the spirit of the Holy Script.
